A shooting on a college campus in North Carolina killed one 24-year-old man and injured six others. Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) confirmed that the shooting occurred on campus following Yard Fest, which was part of the Viking Fest event.
ECSU published a news statement stating that the incident occurred “in the early hours of Sunday, April 27.” The shooting took place at the quad in the center of ECSU’s campus, following the Yard Fest. Six people were hurt as a result; four of them received gunshot wounds. Of the four, three were ECSU students.
On the site, authorities declared a 24-year-old man dead. We will keep his name secret until we notify his next of kin.
After the shooting, law officers secured the area and lifted the lockdown at ECSU later on Sunday.
“As a precaution, ECSU has increased patrols across campus, and access to the center of campus will remain restricted throughout Sunday,” ECSU added.
Currently, no information is known about the suspect or the individuals who may have committed the shooting.
Students React
Several ECSU students spoke with WMGT, explaining how the shooting occurred and how they reacted. One of the witnesses is Mark Hurlbut, who heard the bullets from his window.
“I heard the gunshots through my window and through the walls,” Hurlbut said. “It finally clicked. This happened right outside my door.”
Similarly, Jamarin Johnson, another ECSU student, described the tragedy and expressed his prayers for the victims and their families.
“It was scary for real,” Johnson said. “I was over there talking to one of my friends, and I saw a lot of people running.”
Zion Upchurch, fortunately, fled campus before the incident occurred. However, as the situation unfolded, he heard bullets from his room.
“I had left right before all of this transpired, but I had heard the gunshots from my dorm,” Upchurch said. “And then I got a phone call saying some people had been shot.”
According to CNN, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is probing the event with local officials. They are currently requesting information and footage related to the shooting.
