Deputies, officers, and game wardens in three Southeast Texas counties detained at least 13 people for driving or boating while drunk, as well as other alcohol-related violations, on Sunday and Monday morning. The arrests occurred despite warnings against intoxicated driving and boating over the Memorial Day weekend.
The arrests were made as part of ongoing enforcement efforts during Memorial Day weekend in Jefferson, Hardin, and Orange counties.
Jefferson County had the most arrests, with nine total offenses: five DWIs, two boating while intoxicated charges, and two public drunkenness instances. Orange County authorities arrested two persons for DWI, while Hardin County had one DWI arrest and one liquor violation.
The arrests occurred when troopers from the Department of Public Safety conducted additional patrols as part of its Crash Awareness Reduction Effort (CARE) campaign to detect violators over the holiday weekend. The CARE campaign, which continues until Memorial Day on May 26, is an increased enforcement operation aimed at impaired drivers during high traffic periods.
Jail data from Monday morning show a surge in alcohol-related charges, illustrating the pervasiveness of impaired driving despite public safety warnings made ahead of Memorial Day weekend.
