Elmhurst Police Chief Michael McLean says, “Jugging is when criminals watch victims withdrawing money from their bank, then follow them to another location to steal cash either by breaking into their cars or robbing them.”
According to Chief McLean, on May 29, at about 10 a.m., Elmhurst Police received a 911 call from a parking lot reporting a vehicle burglary. When authorities arrived, a witness reported seeing a man break the window of a parked car before getting into the backseat of a gray SUV and driving away.
Officers located the car’s owner, who stated that he withdrew cash from the bank across the street before going straight to the store. He said the money he withdrew was stolen from his locked car. He stated that there was a gray SUV parked next to him in the bank parking lot.
Surveillance video indicated that the gray SUV carried a forged Tennessee temporary registration tag.
Officers received information at 1 p.m. that the same car, involved in another vehicle burglary, was traveling west on the interstate.
Elmhurst authorities discovered the gray SUV around 1:25 p.m. parked in an accessible parking area near the front doors of a Wells Fargo Bank in Elmhurst, Illinois. There were three males in the van.
Authorities took them into custody.
Police said they discovered a metal window punch, stolen cash, cannabis, and a pill carrying a banned narcotic.
