Charles Edward Vermillion, an adult in custody at the Oregon Department of Corrections (DOC), died in the afternoon of July 3, 2025, according to DOC.
Vermillion was detained at Snake River Correctional Institution (SRCI) in Ontario and died at a provincial hospital while receiving hospice care, according to officials.
“As with all in-custody deaths, the Oregon State Police have been notified, and the State Medical Examiner will determine cause of death,” it said.
Vermillion was taken into prison by the DOC on April 20, 2017, from Klamath County, and his earliest release date is November 5, 2034.
Vermillion was sixty years old. Next of kin has been contacted.
“DOC takes all in-custody deaths seriously,” the agency said. “The agency is responsible for the care and custody of approximately 12,000 individuals who are incarcerated in 12 institutions across the state. While crime information is public record, DOC elects to disclose only upon request out of respect for any family or victims.”
