Bay City Public Schools is mourning the loss of an eighth-grade student who was discovered dead immediately after getting off a school bus Tuesday afternoon.

According to district spokeswoman Ben Tierney, the male student who attended Handy Middle School exited a bus at this routine stop at McGregor Elementary School in the 1000 block of Fremont Street.

Shortly after, a neighbor discovered him lying on the sidewalk and phoned 911. The Bay City Department of Public Safety and emergency medical personnel treated the kid, but he was pronounced dead.

Investigators were unsure what caused the boy’s death Wednesday morning. Police and the Bay County Medical Examiner’s Office were still investigating the death.

“We are heartbroken for this family and will do all we can to support them during this time,” Superintendent Rick Seebeck said in a statement to the community Tuesday evening.

On Wednesday, Bay City Public Schools created a crisis team for students and staff at Handy Middle School. This week, the district will have crisis and grief counselors accessible to support anyone in need.
