On Wednesday, an Indianapolis man was sentenced to nine years in prison after driving all the way to Chicago with a gun, showing up at his ex’s house, and shooting an innocent bystander.
Judge Aleksandra Gillespie sentenced Gregory Mulkey, 33, after he pleaded guilty to aggravated discharge of a handgun against an occupied car, according to court documents.
Gillespie’s girlfriend of roughly six months ended their relationship in September 2023 because of his increasingly “irrational” behavior, according to authorities. Mulkey allegedly drove four days later from Indianapolis to his ex’s Albany Park apartment complex in the 3700 block of West Leland.
Prosecutors say he approached a man sitting in a car behind the building and accused him of “being with” his ex. Mulkey tried to grab the side of the man’s car as he drove away.
According to prosecutors, a neighbor contacted 911 after hearing Mulkey yell his ex’s name and demonstrating “extreme instability.”
Mulkey reappeared minutes later with a revolver, just as another neighbor was cleaning up outside her home. According to prosecutors, the woman noticed him with the firearm and ran into her house as Mulkey fired the revolver. A gunshot wounded the 20-year-old woman’s foot while she was still outside the entryway.
The woman, who has no relation to Mulkey or his ex, had seven stitches to repair a bullet wound that went all the way through. According to prosecutors, doctors diagnosed her with serious nerve and tissue damage.
Mulkey proceeded to the front of the apartment building, stooped down, assumed a shooting posture, and fired another round before hiding in bushes near a school, according to officials.
Mulkey returned to the site and rushed into a cop car, reporting that someone had shot at him, authorities said. The detectives spoke with witnesses and discovered that the man they were looking for was already on their squad.
Officers also discovered a gun that Mulkey’s ex claimed she knew he had. While in police custody, a bullet slipped from his pocket, matching evidence collected at the crime site, according to prosecutors.
Mulkey’s sentence will be cut in half for good behavior, with an additional 593 days of credit earned while awaiting trial.
