Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr., announced the arrests of eight people on June 19 following a year-long investigation into narcotics distribution by the department’s Criminal Intelligence Unit.

The suspects face multiple charges, including possession and distribution of controlled dangerous substances (CDS), distribution within 1,000 feet of a school, distribution within 500 feet of a public park, and unauthorized possession of a weapon.

During the operation, officers confiscated over 1,000 glassine packets of heroin, over 100 grams of crack cocaine, four guns, and $6,321 in cash. The arrests are part of a larger campaign to curb drug-related crime in Newark.

“I commend the detectives of the Criminal Intelligence Unit for their unwavering tenacity in identifying and safely arresting these CDS distribution suspects,” Director Miranda said. “Removing eight suspected narcotics distributors from our streets… supports our crime reduction efforts and produces a safer Newark.”

All allegations are accusations, according to the department, and the accused remain innocent until proven guilty in court.

According to Newark police, the arrests and seizures have dramatically disrupted local drugs activity and represent the department’s continued strategy to minimize violence.
