A Chicago man has been jailed for allegedly robbing a 14-year-old boy of his iPhone, gym shoes, and hoodie at a West Side bus stop, only to be beaten up by the victim’s relatives when they found him minutes later.

Dnario Brown, 18, has been charged with robbery in connection with the June 16 incident outside a bus stop between Roosevelt Road and Central Park Avenue, according to a Chicago Police Department arrest record and court documents acquired by CWBChicago.

Authorities claimed the 14-year-old was walking at 2:40 p.m. on June 16 when four men approached him. One of the males asked for the sweater. When the youngster disregarded them and continued walking, the same man allegedly snatched him up, prompting the boy to strike him in response. A second man then allegedly rifled through the boy’s pockets and snatched his phone, while others took his Nike gym shoes and hoodie, which the CPD said were worth between $1,200 and $1,450.

The arrest report states that the boy hurried barefoot to his grandmother’s nearby home, promptly informing the police.

Prosecutors in a custody proffer said they captured a portion of the incident on video. Surveillance cameras allegedly captured the child departing the scene without shoes and entering his grandmother’s home. It also caught two of the accused criminals running into a building in the 3600 block of West Grenshaw Street, while the other two ran down an alley.

The victim told his mother that he knew one of the thieves by a tattoo above his left brow and that he had seen the man at a facility where his mother worked. Police said she recognized the person as Dnario Brown.

The youngster and his mother walked to the house about five minutes after the robbery, where they observed two of the suspects entering. There, the teen retrieved his iPhone and hoodie. Brown was then “beaten up by members of [the boy’s] family,” stated the complaint.

During a bond hearing, Judge Ankur Srivastava ordered Brown detained in custody pending trial. According to the judge’s detention order, Brown has four past arrests for violent crimes and was already facing charges in anotherongoing case at the time of the heist.

Brown is due back in court later this month.
