Continental Dairy Facilities Southwest LLC has recalled almost 80,000 pounds of Kirkland Signature butter sold at Costco due to a missing allergen label, which could put consumers with milk allergies at risk. The recall involves both unsalted and salted varieties of Kirkland Signature Sweet Cream Butter, packaged in four 4-ounce sticks.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) classified this as a Class II recall, which indicates that while serious health risks are unlikely, temporary or reversible health effects could occur for those with milk allergies. Affected products were distributed in Texas, and it’s unclear if they reached other states.

The FDA designated the recall as a Class II recall on November 7 after it was started on October 11. A Class II recall refers to “a situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) of 2004 mandates that food product labels disclose the source of any significant food allergen in order to safeguard consumers with food allergies.

One of the eight main allergens, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is milk. It is among the most prevalent food allergies among kids. Wheezing, vomiting, hives, and digestive issues are some of the mild to severe symptoms of a milk allergy. Additionally, it may result in anaphylaxis, a serious and sometimes fatal reaction.
