Authorities arrested an alleged MS-13 gang member on Friday during an attempted carjacking in Coral Gables, which was foiled by the victim’s fast thinking. The suspect, Wilson Verela, approached a householder at a stop sign around 1500 Red Road while disguised and attempted to take over the vehicle. According to NBC Miami, the resident escaped and promptly called the police.
Coral Gables Police responded quickly, capturing Verela and recovering a revolver, knife, and mask used in the attempted carjacking. Verela, a Honduran national, had previously served time in prison for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and was just released, according to Local 10 News. He walked out of prison on February 10, after being sentenced to a year and nine months on February 8, 2024.
Furthermore, throughout the inquiry, officials said that Verela admitted to being a member of MS-13, confirming worries about the notorious international gang’s activities. Coral Gables police are currently working with Homeland Security Investigations and Customs and Border Protection to ascertain his legal status in the United States. Sgt. Michelle Christensen, a Coral Gables Police Department spokeswoman, noted the suspect’s admission, which she highlighted in a statement obtained by NBC Miami.
As the investigation progresses, police invite anyone with knowledge to come forward, reassured by Christensen that they “are working with Homeland Security Investigations and Customs and Border Protection.” As suggested by Local 10 News, anyone with information about this incident or other connected incidents may contact Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477 to aid while keeping anonymous.
