A Robbinsdale man will serve a sentence of just over 15 years in the ambush-style killing of what prosecutors say was a rival gang member.
Jahon Ronnell Lynch, 20, was found guilty of second-degree murder, as well as two counts of second-degree murder for attempting to shoot the victim’s friends.
According to a criminal complaint filed against Lynch, the defendant, who was 18 at the time of the fatal shooting, was one of three individuals who leaped from a car on Nov. 6, 2023, near the intersection of 33rd and Dupont Avenues North, chased a group of three men, and opened fire.
Minneapolis police arrived at the disturbance and discovered a 20-year-old guy lying face down with several gunshot wounds. He was pronounced deceased at North Memorial Hospital.
One of the victim’s pals told police that they were strolling when three attackers leaped out of a blue sedan and began firing. He stated that the three men ran into a backyard and shot the victim. The other man targeted informed police that the shooting would only have happened if it was “gang-related.” Lynch was recognized as a member of the Lows gang, whereas the victim belonged to the rival Highs.
Minneapolis homicide detectives identified Lynch as one of the gunmen after tracing the license plate of the getaway vehicle on security film. Days later, when officers spotted the blue Toyota Camry, the driver fled, leading to the discovery of two men hiding under a nearby house. Officers identified Jahon Lynch as the driver of the stolen vehicle.
Detectives retrieved Lynch’s phone records, which showed he was present during the tragic November 6 shooting.
On Thursday, Judge Carolina Lamas sentenced Lynch to 188 months (15.6 years) in the St. Cloud Correctional Facility, plus credit for 551 days served. Once on supervised release, he is not permitted to use or possess guns and must produce a DNA sample.
