An upstate New York man who was due to be released from jail on an unrelated crime was caught again for raping a child in Kingston on Friday, authorities said.

Ronald L. Burris III of Saugerties is suspected of having sexual intercourse with a child many times over the summer, according to a news release from the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office.

The 21-year-old was supposed to be released from Ulster County Jail on November 20, but he was approached by detectives and immediately arrested again. Burris is accused with two felony counts of second-degree rape and one count of endangering the welfare of a minor.

According to the sheriff’s office, Burris’ current arrest stemmed from an inquiry into conversations he was having while in prison with a 14-year-old female who did not appear to be related to him. Detectives quickly established that the texts were “sexual in nature.”

Further inquiry revealed that earlier this year, prior to Burris’ detention, he had “engaged in sexual intercourse with the 14-year-old child on several occasions.”

On the day of his scheduled release, “detectives were there to meet him,” according to the sheriff’s office.

Burris was arraigned in Saugerties Justice Court and ordered returned to Ulster County Jail on $30,000 cash bail, $60,000 bond, or $90,000 partially secured bond.

Details about his previous detention on an unrelated allegation were not revealed.
