Syracuse, N.Y. — Scattered thunderstorms could bring an inch or more of rain to much of Upstate New York today and Saturday.

“Any slow-moving showers and storms may produce heavy downpours that could lead to localized flash flooding,” the National Weather Service warned, issuing a hazardous weather outlook.

The Southern Tier is at the highest risk for rain heavy enough to cause flash flooding.

An inch of rain would be a welcome relief for dry lawns and gardens, as Syracuse has seen just 0.04 inches of rain in the past 10 days.

It’s also been extremely hot: This summer is currently the warmest ever recorded in Syracuse, with July nearly 5 degrees warmer than usual.

Today’s high could reach 90 degrees, and high humidity will make it feel even hotter.

The rain might continue into Saturday, and the heat is expected to linger through Monday. By Tuesday, high temperatures are predicted to fall back into the 70s.

Strong thunderstorms today could bring rain heavy enough to cause flash flooding. The area shaded in green has a 5% to 14% chance of flash flooding. Yellow indicates a 15% to 30% chance.
