A Lancaster man who was awaiting trial and had previously been convicted of federal bank robbery was found dead with sharp-force trauma in the kitchen of a home on West Farnum Street, the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office stated on Saturday, Jan. 25.

Matthew Hill, 40, died at 9:49 a.m. in the kitchen of a home on the 50 block of West Farnum Street in Lancaster City, according to Coroner Dr. Stephen Diamantoni.

The coroner’s office received a call about a cardiac arrest at 9:10 a.m. Officials found Hill lifeless in the kitchen with evidence of sharp-force injuries when investigators arrived.

Hill, who was released from federal prison in June 2024 after serving a sentence for the armed bank robbery of National Penn Bank in Cumru Township, Berks County, on November 7, 2013, faces new allegations of stealing and driving under the influence, according to court documents.

Police shot a machete-wielding man who killed Hill the day after a massive bank heist in Lancaster City on Jan. 24. There is no direct connection between Hill and the robbery. Click here to read the full report on that case.

The Lancaster County Forensic Center received Hill’s body for further investigation and ordered an autopsy. The method and cause of death remain under investigation.
