A 52-year-old man from Broward County’s trip north to St. Lucie County on Tuesday night ended with him in jail.

The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office stated that Byron McCormick expected to meet with a 13-year-old girl but was astonished to discover an SLCSO detective waiting for him.

“The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office is unwavering in our commitment to the safety of our community,” Sheriff Richard Del Toro said. “We will continue to take decisive action against individuals who engage in criminal behavior.”

As investigators investigated McCormick’s criminal past, they discovered he was a drifter who did not register with his probation supervisor. In addition, he owned two phones, which would violate his prohibition on having access to internet-connected gadgets.

The St. Lucie County prison took McCormick, 54, into custody for failing to register his phone number, a county sex offender infraction. They are holding him without a bond.
