Catalytic converter theft is a hot problem in the automotive industry since it can be very profitable and easy for criminals to commit. It is one of the most common crimes involving autos. A man in California was recently convicted of this offense, and he faces up to ten years in prison and a large fine.

Catalytic converter theft impacts cars and drivers all over the world

According to Action News 30, a jury convicted George Thomas, 72, guilty of leading a huge catalytic converter-stealing ring. In total, he earned over $2.7 million. According to the investigation, he operated with a ring of thieves from January 2021 until November 2022. Essentially, he provided the subordinates detailed instructions on what types of converters he needed and how to steal them from cars. He also provided them money for tools they required to commit the thefts, such as saws.

The catalytic converter thefts occurred in Fresno, California. However, they were shipped to Oregon, where Thomas sold them. Authorities caught George Thomas in 2023, and incidences of converter theft in the area declined by roughly 60%, which is quite striking. Following his conviction, the court has scheduled his sentence for September 11th of this year.

Naturally, catalytic converter theft is a major issue for drivers; thus, the man faces a lengthy term. He faces up to ten years in prison and a $250,000 fine. It’s unknown whether officials have apprehended any of his associates who helped take the catalytic converters from autos.
