Chicago is dealing with a string of gunshots that occurred overnight, with police reporting five people wounded and two killed across several neighborhoods. Concern is growing as these incidents highlight the city’s rising violent crime rate.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, one incident in Austin claimed the life of a 35-year-old man. When police arrived at the 1200 block of North Massasoit Avenue around 12:15 a.m., they discovered the victim had two gunshot wounds to the chest. He was sent to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A gun was discovered at the site, but no arrests have been made yet.
On the same night, another shooting occurred in the Austin neighborhood, killing a 24-year-old man after an argument went violent. According to FOX 32 Chicago, the fatal shooting on West Quincy Street began with a verbal confrontation. The unnamed assailant escaped, and the victim died at Mt. Sinai Hospital.
In Englewood, a 15-year-old boy was wounded twice in the left thigh after another verbal altercation turned into gunshots. “The victim was hit twice in the left thigh and taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in good condition,” Fox 32 Chicago said. Similarly, in Burnside, a 21-year-old man was wounded in the leg and taken to the University of Chicago Hospital. The victim was unable to furnish information; thus, the case remains open.
In North Lawndale, a 22-year-old woman sustained multiple gunshot wounds to her head while seated in her car. She made it to Mt. Sinai Hospital and was first thought to be in critical condition. “The offender then fled in an unknown direction,” according to Fox 32 Chicago. No suspects have been apprehended in connection with any of the shootings, as detectives continue to investigate these horrific occurrences.
