A community safety liaison was beaten and robbed by a group of people while patrolling Gompers Park on the Northwest Side, according to prosecutors, who have charged a man accused of participating in the beating.
On the afternoon of May 12, the victim was video documenting persons in the park, 4222 West Foster, as part of his duties as safety liaison.
Prosecutors say Adolfo Agreda, 41, who acknowledged drinking all day, did not appreciate being filmed.
Agreda allegedly testified that he and “a bunch” of other persons violently assaulted the community safety advocate, hitting him with fists and legs until he collapsed.
While the man was down, the group attempted to take his phone, and Agreda allegedly stole the safety liaison’s silver-plated jewelry.
Police arrived to discover the man “bleeding profusely from his mouth, nose, and arms,” according to a CPD report. He pointed at Agreda, who was sitting in a lawn chair near the basketball court, and exclaimed, “That’s him!”
According to the CPD report, the victim’s companion verified Agreda’s involvement in the incident, but they were unable to witness Agreda grab the necklace since the safety liaison was lying on the ground.
Judge John Hock arrested Agreda on charges of robbery and misdemeanor violence.
