A Canadian individual has stirred controversy online after filming a visit to Home Depot where they refused to pay sales tax. Using the TikTok handle @leaderofthefreeworld_, the person shared a video with the caption, “Playtime is over.” In the video, filmed inside a Home Depot store, the man displays his bill, totaling $521.81, and says, “$521.18 — this was before tax for Hands Across Canada; look at that. I’m dropping money for Hands Across Canada.” The cashier asks, “Ready now?” to which the man responds, “No, hold on,” as he counts cash in front of the camera. He then proceeds to pay the total without the sales tax, picks up the camera, and points it at the employee, saying, “Now, you can feel free to call your manager; do what you like. There’s the money. I refuse to pay the tax. I’m part of the Hands Across Canada Axe the Tax.”

The “Axe the Tax” campaign, led by the Conservative Party of Canada, opposes the carbon tax, arguing that it increases the cost of essentials like gas, groceries, and heating during a time of rising living expenses. However, there is confusion surrounding the “Hands Across Canada” movement, which appears to be a separate campaign also opposing the carbon tax.

The Home Depot employee asks for the individual’s tax-exempt number, but the man refuses, stating he has no loyalty to the monarchy and doesn’t need a receipt because he’s “paid enough.” As he attempts to leave, the employee tries to stop him by pushing a full cart toward the exit. The man corrects the employee by calling them “Ma’am” before loudly demanding management. “Ma’am,” he says, before shouting, “Management! I need management! Immediately! I need management. Please move out of the way, ma’am. Look, she’s jumping in the way. Leave it! I put the ****** money there! She can’t do anything. It’s not your job; you don’t have the authority to do that, ma’am.”

Frustrated by the employee’s actions, the man leaves the store, looking back at the camera and saying, “And that’s how you do it.”

Many viewers supported the man in the comments section. One wrote, “This is legendary, I love this guy!” Another commented, “That’s what we all should be doing.” Some viewers even suggested, “Everyone should do this!!” and “Hate to be the worker, but I agree.” The original poster responded, claiming he “really tried to be nice to her” but could tell she was a “Karen.” One commenter found the best part of the video to be when the person shouted, “I NEED MANAGEMENT!” and laughed about it.

However, not all viewers were impressed by the man’s actions. One viewer questioned, “Hands Across Canada??!” and criticized the person for how they treated the employee, calling it “absolutely disgusting behavior, worse than a child.” Erin, a small business owner, also pointed out how such behavior could negatively impact small businesses.
