A Broward County man was arrested over the weekend on charges of using his mother’s money while she was dying in the hospital.
Walter Woods, 64, was arrested Saturday by Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies on many offenses, including grand theft and using or possessing a deceased person’s personal identification.
According to a Pembroke Pines Police Department report dated Jan. 12, 2022, Woods’ 83-year-old mother, Birtell Troup, was hospitalized on June 15, 2020, and died on July 23 of that year.
According to police, Woods allegedly placed a $2,800 cheque from his mother’s bank account into his own account while she was hospitalized.
According to investigators, one of the victim’s other sons discovered this.
Detectives scrutinized the security footage and found that another of his brothers recognized Woods as the one making the deposit at his bank.
Investigators discovered activity on the victim’s credit cards after her death. According to police, Woods attempted to transfer money from her accounts and credit cards into his personal bank accounts.
Additionally, authorities claimed they acquired audio recordings of Woods calling into the bank while impersonating the victim, and his siblings identified him during those calls.
Overall, investigators say Woods stole $6,435.44 from his mother.
