Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating after a fisherman’s body was discovered Monday afternoon near the shores of Lake Michigan in northwestern Indiana.
Around 11:30 a.m. on April 28, officials received word that 67-year-old Michael Barns of Valparaiso had gone underwater near Burns Waterway Harbor in Portage while attempting to retrieve his boat that had drifted into the water.
Several private fishing boats began scanning the waters for Barns. Just over two hours later, a boat equipped with sonar and camera gear located him.
Barns died after being retrieved from the water.
