A routine traffic stop by a Florence Police Department K9 officer led to the discovery of a large amount of illegal drugs and the arrest of two people.
On April 25, at about 7 p.m., a K9 officer was monitoring traffic on Highway 49 South near Gunter Road when a car without a license plate passed by. The officer started a traffic stop after turning on the emergency lights.
During the stop, it was discovered that both the driver, Heatherly Weakley, and the passenger, Sammie Davis Jr., were in possession of a significant amount of illegal narcotics. Officers discovered roughly 223 grams of methamphetamine, 2.3 grams of crack cocaine, and 50 dosage units of oxycodone.
Weakley faced charges of aggravated trafficking of a controlled substance, trafficking a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, driving with a suspended license with implied consent, no tag, and improper equipment.
Davis was additionally charged with aggravated trafficking and possession of a controlled substance.
Both individuals were apprehended and taken to the Rankin County Detention Center.
Florence Police said,
“While some people feel the need to contact City Hall and complain about officers sitting on Hwy 49, this is the reason we do it and this is the reason that we will continue to do it,” the department stated. “Thank you to those that support us and continue to support us. Stay safe!”
