Speeding is risky. I know, an understatement if ever there was one, right? In all seriousness, the NHTSA reports that speeding is a factor in approximately 30% of traffic fatalities. It is extremely deadly when the criminal combines speed and drunkenness. It’s the same deadly mix that one Florida woman unleashed on Tampa streets, driving nearly three times the speed limit after “several glasses of wine.”
A Florida woman hit speeds of around 150 mph in her BMW before police arrested her for a DUI and her reckless driving
Okay, I think most car fans will agree that 55 mph on a three-lane highway feels, well, slow. If you’ve ever driven at triple-digit speeds on the Autobahn or shot down a British B-road at American freeway speeds, you’d almost likely agree. However, this does not excuse 25-year-old Allysia Ortiz’s decision to go 150 mph on a Florida roadway with a 55-mph limit.
Fortunately, the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) stopped Ortiz, but not before she caused chaos by “passing cars and weaving in and out of traffic.” According to ABC Tampa Bay, Ortiz told the FHP that she “had several glasses of wine.” Officers confirmed that she smelled like alcohol at the time.
Officers arrested Ortiz for DUI after administering a standardized field sobriety test (SFST) or breathalyzer test. Her unsafe speed, on the other hand, is a textbook example of reckless driving.
Needless to say, this is a major thing. According to I Drive Safely, breaking the speed limit by 30 mph or more results in a mandatory court appearance before a judge. It is also conceivable that your speeding charges may escalate to dangerous driving. Going 50 mph over the speed limit will almost surely result in more than just a speeding ticket; a reckless driving prosecution is practically guaranteed.
Of course, the Florida woman decided, in her infinite wisdom, to go big and drive home in a police cruiser. After all, she nearly tripled the speed limit while driving inebriated. Speed and drink simply do not mix.
