Jaime Gonzalez Duran, the leader of the Los Zetas cartel, was sentenced to 35 years in jail in the United States for drug trafficking.

Known as “El Hummer,” the individual is also facing the seizure of about $800 million in houses, bank accounts, and other assets, Infobae reported.

Duran pled guilty in February to conspiring to produce and distribute marijuana and cocaine with the knowledge that the drugs would be illegally imported into the United States.

Documents suggest that “El Hummer” was personally responsible for the trafficking of around 450 kilograms of cocaine and 90,000 kilograms of marijuana transported into the United States from Mexico.

The man has also been tied to violent acts against rival cartels, as well as the monitoring and transportation of firearms and explosives.

“Gonzalez Duran was a founding member of Los Zetas, a drug-trafficking organization formed of former Mexican military members that began as the armed wing of the Gulf Cartel. On February 20, 2025, the State Department recognized Los Zetas, also known as the Cartel del Noreste, as a foreign terrorist organization, according to the paper.

In May, the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) imposed penalties on two senior Cartel del Noroeste officials.

The targeted individuals were Ricardo “El Ricky” González Sauceda and Miguel Ángel “Miguelón” de Anda Ledezma. They are high-ranking cartel members from Tamaulipas, Coahuila, and Nuevo León. The organization is well-known for its involvement in drug, human, and gun trafficking, money laundering, and oil theft.

According to the Treasury Department, “Miguelón” controls the cartel’s procurement of firearms and ammunition, as well as payments to facilitators and straw purchasers in the United States. He is also accused of directing weapons deliveries to Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, near the US-Mexico border.

According to prosecutors, González oversaw the cartel’s armed branch, known as “Los Chukys,” and was CDN’s second-in-command until his arrest by Mexican authorities in February 2025. He is accused of utilizing trafficked firearms to target Mexican police and military troops, as well as involvement in drug trafficking activities.
