A former teacher and coach from New Caney ISD has been sentenced to four years in prison for engaging in an improper relationship between a student and a teacher, as announced by the 359th District Court in Montgomery County.

Timeline: At the time, Samantha Cummings, then 35, had just started her career with the district. She was teaching culinary arts and also coaching track and volleyball.
According to court documents, Cummings was in a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old female New Caney High School student.
According to reports, the relationship is said to have begun in December 2022.
New Caney ISD reported that she resigned from her position after being placed on administrative leave following a report of alleged misconduct received by the school.
In January 2023, New Caney ISD Police arrested her after conducting an investigation into the matter.
“Student safety is a top priority for New Caney ISD, and the district will always take immediate and appropriate action to protect the safety of students and staff,” school officials stated in a news release when Cummings was arrested.
Engaging in an inappropriate relationship between an educator and a student is considered a second degree felony.
In Texas, if convicted of a second-degree felony, an individual may face imprisonment for a period ranging from two to 20 years.
