In a significant move to enhance public safety across Texas, Governor Greg Abbott announced on Wednesday that the Public Safety Office will distribute over $500 million in grants to support critical safety initiatives statewide. These grants aim to bolster border security, combat human trafficking, provide justice for victims, and protect Texans from violence and criminal activity.

“These public safety grants will strengthen Texas agencies and organizations, equipping them to safeguard our communities and secure the border,” stated Gov. Abbott during the announcement.

The Texas Tribune reports that the funding comprises hundreds of individual grants administered through the Governor’s Public Safety Office. Beneficiaries include local police departments, nonprofit organizations focused on crime prevention, district attorney offices, and various state agencies.

Among the major allocations are:

  • $194.9 million for crime victims and violence against women. This funding aims to expedite victims’ recoveries and improve the criminal justice system.
  • $56.5 million for Homeland Security to enhance state-level training and equipment in the fight against terrorism.
  • $55.7 million for Operation Lone Star to boost border security and reduce criminal activity along Texas’ borders.
  • $30.4 million for nonprofit security upgrades to protect religious and nonprofit organizations from potential terrorist threats.

The program combines federal and state funding to ensure these critical resources are available. Gov. Abbott emphasized that safeguarding all Texans remains the state’s top priority, with these grants serving as a powerful tool to address pressing safety challenges.

This announcement reflects Texas’ ongoing commitment to public safety and justice for its citizens, providing resources to tackle some of the state’s most pressing security concerns.
