After a generally sunny and hazy weekend, clouds will return to the area early Tuesday morning, bringing with them the potential of rain and thunderstorms.
Two minor weather systems, known as shortwave troughs, one over the northern plains and the other over the southern high plains, will unite and move eastward.
An extremely long cold front is likely to form and reach all the way from southern Wisconsin to northern Texas. This cold front is likely to produce two distinct storm modes.
Cloud cover will limit instability over sections of this zone from northeast Missouri to southern Wisconsin, resulting in isolated and scattered showers and storms early in the day.
This cloud cover will not be present farther south. However, as the cold front strengthens, storm mode should become more linear during the day.
Currently, the greatest concerns are destructive winds along the line of thunderstorms, with the chance of damaging hail as well.
Furthermore, severe rainfall is forecast, with flash floods possible, as storms sweep through the area, dropping up to 2 inches or more.
Rainfall is forecast to persist for the majority of this week, with rain chances lasting until June 8th.
Updates on the situation will be posted as they become available. Stay weather-aware throughout the day on Tuesday.
