President-elect Trump’s choice for “border czar,” Tom Homan, threatened to cut funding for states that refuse to cooperate with the federal government’s deportation efforts on Sunday.

In an interview with Fox News’s Mark Levin, Homan discussed how the “border czar” would wield a powerful tool often used by Democrats when they are in power: federal funding.

“If a governor says, ‘I’m not going to cooperate… I’m going to block you,’ then federal funds should be drastically reduced for that state, so the people understand that it’s the governor and the mayor who are responsible,” Levin explained.

Homan agreed, stating, “That’s going to happen, I guarantee you,” and added that the president-elect “will do that.”

Trump and Homan have gained attention for their tough stance on immigration, including threats to use military resources for mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.

Trump transition team spokesperson Karoline Leavitt also emphasized that the president-elect intends to utilize every federal and state power available to carry out the “largest deportation operation of illegal criminals, drug dealers, and human traffickers in American history, while simultaneously lowering costs for families.”

Several Democratic governors, such as Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and California Gov. Gavin Newsom, have pledged to oppose the incoming Trump administration’s policies. Pritzker warned, “If someone attempts to ‘come for my people,’ they’ll have to go through me.”

Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs (D) stated that while she would work with the Trump administration on border security, she would not tolerate actions that “terrorize communities or threaten Arizonans.”

Homan urged Democrats to put aside their opposition to Trump and cooperate.

“President Trump has made it clear that we’re prioritizing public safety and national security threats, because they pose the most danger to this country,” Homan said. “What governor or mayor doesn’t want those threats out of their neighborhoods and communities?”

He continued, “Their number one responsibility is public safety. You can hate Trump all you want, but you should love your community more than you hate President Trump.”

In response, Democratic National Committee (DNC) spokesperson Alex Floyd issued a statement to The Hill on Monday, accusing Trump of attempting to cut law enforcement funding during his previous administration while violent crime increased.

“Now, he and his allies are threatening to cut off resources again, jeopardizing Americans’ safety and security,” Floyd said. “Democrats will stand up against any attempt to politicize law enforcement funding, no matter what reckless plans Trump proposes for critical resources for our law enforcement personnel.”
