FOX 26 Reporter Damali Keith had a conversation with the doctor and his attorney to discuss their plans following the doctor’s acquittal.

In a significant crackdown by the Department of Justice, 23 individuals were apprehended for fraudulent activities, including a romance scam that victimized numerous people.

A Houston doctor was among the individuals who faced charges, but he was the only one who was acquitted.

A high school student from Lamar High School will be tried as an adult and is now facing a felony gun charge.

Dr. Segun Adeoye spent 30 months in jail before being acquitted by a jury in March 2024. Due to being considered a flight risk, he was denied bail.

“It feels like a scene straight out of a horror movie,” says Adeoye, but this terrifying creature is far more chilling than anything you’d see on the big screen.

In 2021, Houston-based Dr. Segun Adeoye volunteered at a hospital in Kermit, Texas to assist with the surge in COVID cases. However, his first day took an unexpected turn when he was apprehended by federal agents in the emergency room. He now faces charges of conspiracy to commit money laundering and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

“I wouldn’t wish this experience on my worst enemy. My life has been nearly perfect, so it was incredibly shocking when it happened. I remember asking the FBI agent, ‘Are you absolutely sure you have the right person?’ He assured me, ‘Yes, it’s definitely you.’ The worst part was losing my father while I was incarcerated. I didn’t have a chance to grieve or attend his funeral. It breaks my heart knowing that he passed away, believing that his son, whom he raised so well, was locked up in jail,” Adeoye revealed.

“It has been an incredibly challenging experience for me. While I was imprisoned, I had to endure the unfortunate circumstance of having my Christmas meal in a cell that was flooded with excrement. Even now that I am free, I face the unfortunate reality that some of my friends hesitate to associate with me due to lingering doubts. This entire ordeal is something I wouldn’t even wish upon my worst enemy. However, there is one solace that I held onto throughout this ordeal – I knew deep down that I would be proven innocent. It was the agonizing wait that truly tested my resolve, and it almost shattered me,” Adeoye reflects.

Adeoye expressed his certainty about being acquitted but expressed concern about reclaiming his tarnished reputation.

Community Activist Quanell X questions, “How will the government restore his stolen name, livelihood, and career, all unjustly taken by the Department of Justice and the FBI, under the false pretense that he committed a crime he was unaware of?”

“We are taking legal action against the U.S. government. I’m not sure if any amount of money can adequately compensate him for the hardships and suffering he has endured. Our main objective is to hold them accountable and ensure that no one else has to go through a similar ordeal,” Ogunjumelo stated.

Adeoye, who is seeking almost $400 million in damages, emphasizes that although you have regained your life, it will take years to rebuild it.

We have contacted the Department of Justice to obtain their comment on the lawsuit, and we are currently waiting for their response.
