Human Smugglers Using Social Media to Land Texas Drivers in Jail

Social media is being utilized by human smugglers and cartels to deceive Texas drivers, particularly the younger ones, into engaging in dangerous games of evasion with law enforcement, leading to potentially disastrous outcomes.

Texans are being lured into high-paying jobs with a significant risk factor through platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat.

In a distressing incident, a man from San Antonio could potentially face a 10-year prison sentence due to his misguided attempt at earning money and impressing a woman.

Nowadays, services like Uber and Lyft have become extremely popular. These platforms allow regular individuals to drive others and earn money. Interestingly, this is similar to the strategy employed by human smugglers. Instead of transporting goods, they are now transporting people.

They place advertisements or personally approach individuals, as seen in the aforementioned example, and provide attractive compensation for picking up someone on one side of the border and transporting them to another location, still within the same border. This may involve assisting with driving a moving truck, and the scheme can vary in its execution.

Easy money, but those individuals may not be who you assume them to be. They could potentially be criminals or victims of human smuggling. Regardless, if they are apprehended, whether the driver was complicit or deceived, they will face the consequences.

Texas’ human smuggling law has been in the books for a quarter century, but over the last decade the state Legislature has repeatedly broadened it and made the punishment more extreme. People convicted under federal human smuggling law face on average about 15 months in prison. Last year, state lawmakers imposed a mandatory 10-year minimum sentence on anyone convicted under the Texas law. – texastribune

If you or someone you know has received one of these dream offers, it is important to take them seriously. While some may question the law, it is crucial to remember that it is still the law in Texas. In order to navigate this situation, it is advisable to thoroughly research and seek guidance from the appropriate authorities.

We often hear the saying, “if something seems too good to be true, it usually isn’t.”
