An undocumented immigrant who was previously deported three times for significant criminal convictions has been charged in Chicago with illegally re-entering the United States, federal officials announced.
What we know: Salvador Guerrero-Lopez, 42, was charged in a federal indictment on Monday with one count of unlawful re-entry after deportation, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chicago.
Guerrero-Lopez, who had been living in Island Lake, was detained on May 30.
Authorities claimed he was previously deported to Mexico in 2004, 2011, and 2021 after being convicted of illicit sexual intercourse with a child in California and drug distribution in Arkansas.
He was apprehended when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations in Eagle Pass, Texas, requested assistance from Chicago local enforcement in locating and arresting him.
Guerrero-Lopez was being investigated in Texas for alleged criminal conduct, according to officials.
What’s next: If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in federal prison and a fine of $250,000. He could be deported again.
An arraignment date in federal court in Chicago has not been set.
