For most people, winning the lottery once in a lifetime is an unattainable goal. But for Sharon Godsey of Concord, that dream has come true twice. Her most recent victory came in the March 31 Powerball drawing, which netted her another $100,000.
“I just hit the floor!” My knees have crumbled!” Godsey informed Virginia Lottery authorities about the moment she found her giant victory.
Sharon purchased her winning ticket at Carson Market, located at 10060 Village Highway in Concord. She matched four of the first five numbers, as well as the Powerball number. While that would ordinarily result in a $50,000 reward, she chose to spend an additional dollar on Power Play, doubling her prize to $100,000.
The winning numbers in that drawing were 12, 41, 44, 52, and 64, and the Powerball number was 25. Sharon chose the numbers herself, using a blend of her preferences. Her success is extraordinary not only due to the odds but also because she had previously won a comparable prize. In 2013, Sharon won the top $100,000 prize in the Virginia Lottery’s Sapphire Riches scratch-off game.
Beating the Odds Once Again
Every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:59 p.m., a Powerball drawing is held. The odds of winning the jackpot by matching all six numbers are 1 in 292.2 million, while the odds of winning any other Powerball prize are 1 in 25.
Sharon’s remarkable double triumph is a rare instance of lightning striking twice in the same location. Her narrative serves as a strong reminder that fortune can smile more than once—and that occasionally choosing your favorite numbers and paying that additional dollar might be the difference.
