Two transit officers from the NYPD were assaulted on Wednesday afternoon by a man they had caught drinking on a subway platform in Manhattan, according to the police.
At 2:25 p.m., while conducting a transit inspection at the West 4th Street subway station, the officers noticed a 36-year-old man drinking on the northbound A, C, and E platform.
They asked the suspect to drop the bottle, but he crushed it and used the glass to slice one of the officers’ hands. He then bit the other officer’s leg, according to authorities.
According to a witness at the scene, the aftermath of the alleged assault was in a state of chaos, as reported by 1010 WINS.
“Emergency units, ambulance, and they ran into the subway, and then I saw a stretcher come out and someone was on the stretcher,” he said.
According to authorities, both transit cops were transported to a local hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.
According to the police, they have taken the suspect into custody and are currently pending charges.
Officers are still conducting an ongoing investigation and have been actively searching for witnesses both inside and outside the subway station since early Wednesday evening.
