A man has died at Lake Pueblo State Park after attempting to save several kids struggling in the water on Wednesday afternoon, according to a spokesperson for Lake Pueblo State Park.
According to officials, several children were swimming in the lake and were distressed when the wind and waves increased. They claimed the 53-year-old man jumped into the lake to assist them.
According to officials, the man then began to struggle, and others jumped into the water to assist. Officials stated he had already began to sink by the time he was rescued.
Officials and responders from the lake attempted CPR for nearly 40 minutes, but the man passed away immediately.
According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials, the man was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident, and the water was about 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
According to CPW officials, two of the children were the man’s children, and the other two were friends. CPW reports that all of the children are safe and with their caregivers.
“CPW extends condolences to the victim’s family and friends, as well as everyone involved in the incident,” stated Becky Buist, Lake Pueblo State Park Operations Manager.
According to officials, the coroner will make an official determination about the man’s death.
