A man discovered two babies abandoned in a ditch in freezing temperatures while collecting packages outside his home.

Robert Deane, from the southeast side of Indianapolis, noticed two car seats in a ditch and decided to investigate. To his shock, he found two baby girls, aged 4 and 5 months, left in icy conditions. Authorities later determined the infants had been kidnapped during the theft of a vehicle.

The duration the babies had been exposed to the 27-degree weather was unclear. Indianapolis police spokesman William Young stated, “It’s cold out here. Who knows what could have happened if this particular individual was not able to come outside. It’s extremely cold, and we’re still in our early stages of trying to figure out who was responsible for this.”

Young commended Deane for his actions, saying, “He did what any good person would do. He got those infants to shelter. This is an outcome that we wanted. I can’t thank that good Samaritan enough. We don’t have a suspect in custody, but that will be our next priority is figuring out who is responsible for this particular incident.”

In a separate incident, tragedy struck in Los Angeles when a newborn was found dead after reportedly being thrown from a 4th-floor window on Skid Row.

The baby boy was discovered in an alley near the 500 block of San Pedro Street at around 5:30 a.m. Thursday. A passerby attempted CPR until first responders arrived, but the infant was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators suspect the newborn was thrown from a 4th-floor bathroom window after his mother gave birth. Around the same time, a woman was transported to the hospital due to heavy bleeding.

Police detained the woman, who had sought medical treatment, but later released her pending further investigation.
