Erin Sheffey, a 30-year-old resident of Washington, D.C., received a sentence of 18 years in prison on Wednesday for his involvement in a string of armed robberies that specifically targeted Brinks armored cars in the nation’s capital. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia announced the sentencing.
The U.S. attorney’s office has stated that the crimes were a result of three separate incidents involving the robbery of Brinks trucks. These incidents took place on October 6, 2021, December 8, 2021, and March 2, 2022.
William Brock, 33, Anthony Antwon McNair, 36, and Sheffey employed assault rifles to ambush Brinks drivers and make off with over $1.2 million during the robberies, as reported by the U.S. attorney’s office.
The department revealed that Brock, the co-defendant, carefully orchestrated the heists by meticulously studying the routes and arrival times of Brinks drivers. This meticulous planning ensured that the robbery team was fully prepared for the operation.
The department reported that the robberies took place on Wednesdays at approximately 9 a.m. Moreover, two of the incidents occurred on busy city thoroughfares, which posed a considerable risk to the public.
The department stated that the robbers attacked Brinks drivers as they stepped out of their armored vehicles to deliver money to banks or businesses.
The U.S. attorney’s office disclosed that in two instances, the defendants continued to attack drivers despite the drivers surrendering their courier bags.
The department further stated that certain defendants proudly displayed their ill-gotten wealth on social media, showcasing lavish purchases through shared photos.
Within just two days of the robberies, Brock wasted no time in using cash to purchase vehicles worth a staggering $36,000, as reported by the U.S. attorney’s office.
In addition to that, the Department confirmed that the jury also found the co-defendants Brock and McNair guilty of interference with interstate commerce, bank robbery, and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence.
