A man who openly admitted to shooting and killing another man in Rogers Park has been sentenced to four years in prison for illegal possession of the firearm used in the shooting.
Prosecutors never charged Kamari Robinson, 26, with killing Kenneth Sandy, 30, because they believed he was acting in self-defense. However, they did prosecute the three-time offender with illegally possessing a firearm.
Sandy and Robinson got into a disagreement around 2 p.m. on November 16, 2023, in the 1600 block of West Howard, only feet from the Howard CTA stop, according to officials. The debate became physical, and Robinson allegedly shot Sandy dead while a nearby surveillance camera filmed the incident.
When Chicago authorities arrived, Robinson approached an officer and acknowledged shooting Sandy but claimed it was in self-defense, according to his arrest report. He allegedly informed police that he gave the gun to his sister after the shooting.
Sandy died in less than thirty minutes. According to police, he received two bullet wounds to the left side of his chest and another to his arm. According to an officer’s report, prosecutors “rejected” murder charges “due to self-defense.” Robinson is solely charged with felony unauthorized use of a weapon.
Robinson has pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a handgun. Judge Aleksandra Gillespie sentenced him to four years in prison, with half of that time served. His sentence will be reduced by 530 days because of the time he spent wearing an ankle monitor after being apprehended.
According to public records, Robinson’s previous felony convictions were for aggravated battery, hate crime, and possession of a controlled substance in 2017.
