A Maryland man was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder in a shooting that left two people dead back in 2023. State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy and prosecutors announced the conviction of Christopher Jenkins on Monday.
Court documents give more details about what happened before an attempted robbery turned into a deadly shooting at a Super 8 motel in Camp Springs.
According to the Prince George’s County Police Department, officers were dispatched to the motel in the 5100 block of Allentown Road around 7 a.m. on June 28, 2023.
When officers arrived, they discovered two individuals had been shot. One of the guys died at the motel, while the other was sent to a nearby hospital. He died of his injuries a short time later.
The two males killed have subsequently been identified: Xavier Matthews, 23, of Temple Hills, and Karon Moore, 26, of Washington, D.C.
A day later, authorities announced the arrest of two people involved in the fatal gunshot, including the woman who rented the room where the victim died.
Keymonte Day, 24, of Washington, D.C., and Christopher Jamar Jenkins, 22, of Capitol Heights, were charged with first-degree murder for their alleged involvement.
According to criminal documents, the Super 8 management office acknowledged that Day reserved a room at the motel where Matthews and Moore were killed.
When investigators investigated the room, they discovered firearms, telephones, clothes, blood, and other evidence.
According to court filings, Matthews arrived with Day in his black Porsche SUV shortly before 5 a.m. After Day reserved the hotel, authorities say security video shows her placing a key card to their suite on the ground behind Matthews’ Porsche tires.
Shortly before 6:15 a.m., a blue Infiniti sedan approaches the motel, and a man grabs the hidden key card.
At 6:55 a.m., three suspects emerged from the Infiniti. Officers claim the suspects approached the room with firearms and masks to hide their faces before using the key card that Day is accused of hiding for them.
A little time later, Day is observed leaving the room and entering the Infiniti. Soon, two of the three suspects exit, and the SUV drives away.
On Monday, nearly two years after the crime, Braveboy expressed gratitude to prosecutors for their efforts in obtaining a conviction.
“We are grateful that we were able to get justice for their families, but nothing will bring these two young men back,” Braveboy told the audience.
In addition to two counts of murder, Jenkins was found guilty of conspiracy and firearms offenses.
Ernestine Covington, Matthew’s grandmother, spoke after the verdict was announced. She praised everyone who worked to achieve justice for her grandchild.
“He didn’t deserve what he got, and I’m glad justice has been served for him,” she informed me.
Jenkins’ sentencing hearing in this case has yet to be scheduled.
