Aaron Herndon, a 39-year-old resident of Suitland, Maryland, has been given an 18-month prison sentence for robbing an 87-year-old man at a McDonald’s restaurant in Northwest D.C. The sentencing was announced on Friday by U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin, Jr., and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).
On December 17, 2024, Herndon admitted his guilt in the robbery. Superior Court Judge Jason Park imposed an 18-month prison term and mandated three years of supervised release after his imprisonment.
The incident took place around 1:00 p.m. on May 5, 2024, at the McDonald’s situated at 4100 Wisconsin Avenue NW, as stated in the court evidence. As the 87-year-old victim was buying gift cards, Herndon approached him from behind after he left the restroom. The restaurant’s video footage clearly captured Herndon reaching into the victim’s jacket pocket and stealing his wallet.
Several witnesses at the scene saw Herndon depart the restaurant on foot. Law enforcement agents apprehended Herndon later that day. Crucially, he continued to wear the same clothes he had worn during the crime, providing substantial evidence of his involvement.
The Metropolitan Police Department conducted the investigation into this case, while the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia handled the prosecution. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Negar Kordestani, Trisha Jhunjhnuwala, and Hannah Skopicki were responsible for handling the prosecution.
