A fare evasion stop at a Metro station resulted in the arrest of an attempted murder suspect.
Metro Transit Police have been cracking down on fare evaders at stations in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.
When they stopped a man at the Gallery Place Metro station Wednesday night, they had no idea they had also arrested a suspect accused of attempted murder.
Suspect Stopped
On May 7, Metro Transit Police stopped 20-year-old Zion Peters for fare evasion. They handcuffed him after he reportedly assaulted an officer. Police say they also discovered a firearm on him.
After additional inquiry, MTPD officers determined that Peters had outstanding warrants in Hyattsville. The charges against them included attempted murder and robbery.
2023 Shooting
FOX 5 reported on Peters’ suspected attempted murder. In September 2023, a shooting occurred near the Regal Hyattsville Royale movie theater in Maryland.
According to investigators, Peters got into an argument with a man, shot him in the stomach, and ran away. The victim survived the shooting, and Peters was never apprehended.
Fighting Violent Crime
People in Hyattsville say they’re just glad he’s behind bars.
“I heard the story that he got caught jumping the fare or whatever the case may be. I’m just glad he’s off the streets. I’m glad because I have a son right here and my son and he means the world to me,” one Hyattsville resident told FOX 5.
“More crime needs to be taken off the streets,” said another.
Charges Pending
What’s next: Peters’ next court appearance is set for June 24.
