A mass shooting occurred on Tuesday, April 15, at Wilmer-Hutchins High School in Dallas, Texas, injuring four students. According to officials, three of the injured students were shot, with one grazed. In 2024, a gunshot at the same high school injured one of the students in the leg.
The Dallas Independent School District reported minutes before 2 p.m. that police officers responded to a shooting at Wilmer-Hutchins High School at about 1:25 p.m.
“Police are responding to a shooting incident at Wilmer-Hutchins High School,” the school district wrote on X. “Safety protocols have been implemented, and we are asking everyone to refrain from coming to the campus. Reunification plans will be shared shortly.”
According to NBC, the gunshot occurred at approximately 1 p.m. According to a student’s dad and a student, both of whom spoke with the publication, six rounds were fired at the school.
“We were in class and I saw him walk by and then two seconds later I heard like six shots,” the student, a female junior, said. “The teacher ran to the door and closed it, and told us to hide in the corner.”
According to Fox 7, Dallas Mayor Pro Tempore Tenell Atkins said that the three victims shot sustained non-life-threatening injuries. However, Dallas Fire-Rescue (DFR) acknowledged to NBC that the victim’s injuries were non-life-threatening to severe. The students’ ages ranged from 15 to 18, according to the DFR.
Parents Worried, Details Revealed
Worried parents described what their children had to go through during the shooting. Jose Morales informed NBC that his wife and two children were inside the school. According to him, the shooter fired directly at his daughter. She fled into the counselor’s office, where her mother was present. Her son was in another area of the school.
“I’m feeling very anxious, I just drove from Fort Worth. I left my job and came straight over here, so I haven’t seen her yet. The kids are still inside the school. My kids are still trapped inside the school. They won’t let them out, they’re inside the school.”
Another parent, LaTara Dobbin, told NCB that her son leaped out of a window and went to a local primary school.
“This is going on too much at this school,” Dobbin said. “Last year, my oldest son was a senior here, and there was a shooting. Now he’s here, and the same thing is going on. It’s ridiculous. It’s ridiculous. I’m going to have to transfer him or something because this is going on too often here.”
Dobbin is referring to the April 2024 incident at Wilmer-Hutchins High School, where one student was wounded in the leg. Students staged a walkout in protest, demanding answers from authorities. Reports indicate that the high school metal detectors were operational during both the shooting and the latest incident.
Dallas Mayor Eric L. Johnson delivered a statement regarding the tragedy.
“I’m deeply troubled to learn that a shooting has taken place at Wilmer-Hutchins High School in Dallas,” Johnson wrote on X. “Our schools should never be places of violence. I’m grateful to the Dallas Police Department and Dallas Fire-Rescue for their swift response to this situation.”
