The Texas Department of Public Safety reported on April 22 that a Mexican Mafia gang member led officials on a chase while transporting migrants.
The case unfolded on April 14 when a red Dodge Ram led troopers on a high-speed chase on Interstate 35 in Webb County.
According to DPS, the driver then smashed into a ranch fence, left the vehicle, and continued escaping on foot over private land.
Troopers apprehended the motorist with the assistance of the US Border Patrol. He was identified as John Henry Romero, a Mexican Mafia gang member from Rio Bravo, Mexico.
Romero was charged with three charges of human smuggling, one count of smuggling a minor under the age of 18, and avoiding arrest with a vehicle, all felonies.
He was also charged with escaping arrest on foot, careless driving, and criminal mischief, all of which are misdemeanors.
Border Patrol also apprehended four Mexican migrants, including a 15-year-old child. Agents brought the migrants into custody.
