Missouri Bill Proposes $1,000 Payout for Reporting Undocumented Migrants

A newly introduced bill in the Missouri Senate could grant residents $1,000 for reporting undocumented migrants. This proposal is one of seven immigration-focused bills presented by Republican lawmakers in the state.

Sen.-elect David Gregory is leading the initiative, which includes establishing an online portal for citizens to report undocumented migrants to the State Highway Patrol, enabling them to claim the reward.

Creation of a Bounty Hunter Program

Senate Bill 72 also outlines the creation of the “Missouri Illegal Alien Certified Bounty Hunter Program.” This program would allow licensed bail bond agents to apply for certification to locate and detain undocumented migrants.

The bill further stipulates that individuals knowingly entering Missouri without proper documentation would face a charge of “trespass by an illegal alien.” Convictions would bar them from accessing public benefits, voting, obtaining a driver’s license, or ever achieving legal residency in Missouri.

State vs. Federal Authority on Immigration

The proposal raises questions about state versus federal jurisdiction on immigration enforcement. Historically, immigration matters have been under federal control. The Biden administration is challenging a Texas law allowing state-level arrests and removals of undocumented migrants, and the Supreme Court previously invalidated a similar law in Arizona.

Political Context and Economic Concerns

Former President Donald Trump emphasized immigration in his platform, vowing stricter enforcement and deportation measures. His proposals included leveraging military resources to deport an estimated 11 million undocumented migrants, though logistical and legal challenges remain unclear.

Opponents of Missouri’s plan argue it could harm sectors like agriculture, where undocumented workers play a significant role. Republican proponents counter that stricter immigration policies are necessary to combat crime and drug distribution.

Additional Republican Proposals in Missouri

Other immigration-related proposals in Missouri include penalties for hiring undocumented workers, new offenses with potential jail time, and fines for cities implementing sanctuary policies.

Earlier this year, Missouri Gov. Mike Parson allocated $2.2 million to deploy Highway Patrol officers and National Guard members to Texas as part of “Operation Lonestar,” aimed at border security.
