In a strong show of support, Governor Phil Murphy has once again emphasized his administration’s dedication to safeguarding immigrants in New Jersey. He firmly defended the current policies in place while also indicating a potential endorsement for the Immigrant Trust Act, a proposed legislation aimed at further protecting the rights of immigrants.

Governor Murphy highlighted his administration’s strategy, which involves utilizing legal action, executive orders, and public advocacy to combat federal immigration enforcement initiatives. He emphasized the importance of being proactive and utilizing the power of his position to advocate for change. Additionally, he acknowledged the significant contribution of New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin in these endeavors.

During Trump’s first term, Murphy recounted an incident where he became worried about Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) targeting day laborers near his home. To address the issue, he decided to take matters into his own hands. “I just drove over with my guys… and we just hung out there,” Murphy shared. Surprisingly, nobody from ICE ever showed up, alleviating their concerns.

Murphy refrained from taking a firm position on the Immigrant Trust Act, as it is currently being deliberated. However, he expressed his admiration for certain aspects of the bill, referring to them as “very appealing.” Additionally, he highlighted the accomplishments of New Jersey’s 2018 Immigrant Trust Directive, established by former Attorney General Gurbir Grewal, which restricts collaboration between local law enforcement and federal immigration agencies.

According to Murphy, New Jersey’s strategy of keeping immigration enforcement separate from criminal investigations has proven to be successful and has even withstood legal challenges, including rulings from judges appointed by the Trump administration.
