A New Jersey man wanted for manslaughter in Essex County was apprehended at the Canadian border near Buffalo on Monday, according to Customs and Border Protection officials.
Malakai McRay, 22, of Newark, was charged Monday with second-degree homicide and firearms violations, according to court records.
McRay was wanted in connection with Yasir Mackenson’s death on May 16, according to an official from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office on Tuesday.
McRay was discovered by authorities at the Port of Buffalo’s Rainbow Bridge border crossing while attempting to cross into the United States, according to officials.
According to authorities, McRay had an active warrant out of Essex County for his arrest.
McRay was turned over to New York State Police and is now in custody with the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, awaiting extradition to New Jersey, according to officials.
Authorities provided no other information on the event on Tuesday, and an investigation is still underway, according to officials.
McRay did not have an attorney listed in court documents.
