Unlike most women, Annette Addo-Yobo has a unique addition to her closet – a jeweled crown and sash.

As he took them out of their glass box, Addo-Yobo commented, “These are really heavy-duty. By the way, I had the pleasure of spending the weekend with Miss America.”

Earlier this month, Miss Addo-Yobo created history by winning the title of Miss Texas.

Addo-Yobo proudly declared that she is not only the first immigrant-born Miss Texas but also the first Ghanaian to win the title.

As a toddler, Addo-Yobo migrated to the United States from Ghana, and after becoming a U.S. citizen two years ago, she became eligible to participate in the pageant. Her journey to winning the title began with triumphs at Miss Dallas, followed by Miss Southlake, and eventually leading up to Miss Texas.

When young girls and women lay their eyes on her, she desires them to perceive beyond her crown as a beauty queen.

Addo-Yobo, the reigning Miss Texas, believes in reframing the conversation around immigrants by highlighting their hard work and dedication. As a highly educated individual with two master’s degrees and plans to attend law school, she embodies the message that the Miss America organization empowers all women to lead. According to her, any woman, including herself, you, or even ‘Susie Q’ down the street, can represent the diverse and inclusive nature of this opportunity.

Addo-Yobo’s attention was captured by Nia Imani Franklin, the winner of the 2019 Miss America pageant.

Addo-Yobo expressed how impactful it was for her to witness Nia Imani Franklin win Miss America. Around the same time, there were also Black women who won Miss USA and Miss Universe, which made the achievement feel even more attainable. This made her dream of becoming a pageant winner feel like a reality, as she had seen it accomplished before.

Addo-Yobo is optimistic that those who come after her will be inspired by her journey and realize that they too can transform their aspirations into tangible accomplishments.

Miss Texas, Addo-Yobo, has based her reign platform on autism awareness, with a focus on the SPARK project. Being the sister of a younger brother on the spectrum, she aims to empower individuals to become advocates for autism.

Miss Texas, Addo-Yobo, is set to participate in the upcoming Miss America competition.
