The McCulloch County Commissioners met on Monday (June 14) at 9AM.  During department head reports, Commissioners heard from Sheriff Andrews regarding the use of inmate labor.  In the last three months, 392 hours have been worked by jail inmates on various projects around the county.

Discussion Items -

There was considerable discussion by the Commissioners regarding the recent roof repair at the County Clerk's office.  Apparently there was some miscommunication on the actual scope of the project.  The contractor, Roberts Roofing, stated they had submitted two bids - one for repair and one for replacement and based on communication they received, installed a new roof. Commissioner Kemp commented that the Court had approved a bid for $1,950 but the actual cost was nearly ten times that amount.

Commissioner Deans remarked that going forward, any future projects need be overseen by at least one of the Commissioners or the County Judge.  He also asked that Roberts Roofing provide the Court with a cost breakdown for the labor and materials for the work completed by the next Commissioner's Court meeting on June 28.

Next up, Commissioner Anderson discussed the County Transportation Infrastructure fund grant program.  The grant provides funding for chip and seal work on certain sections of county roads.

County Treasurer Mikkie Williams discussed going out for bids for auditing services and plans to seek bids from qualified firms.

The last discussion item centered on closing the library fund account and putting unused funds back to the general fund (will go towards the principal on the library or courthouse restoration bond).  A $255,000 balance remains on the the courthouse bond.  Mikkie Williams indicated that funds would need to be moved by July 31.

Action Items -

  • 1.  Approved the LGS Court application addendum.  This results in a $111 a month cost savings for the county.
  • 2.  Approved acceptance of a letter of resignation from Library Director, Sheridan Hosid.
  • 3.  Approved a call for proposal for auditing services.
  • 4.  Approved closing the library fund account and moving funds to the bond and general fund.

Following the regular meeting, the Commissioners took a 5 minute recess before reconvening into a budget workshop.  Next Commissioner's Court meeting will be on June 28 at 9AM.
