A clever employee at the Macy’s store in Downtown Brooklyn foiled a burglar’s attempt to steal $1.5 million worth of jewelry, according to police. The burglar was caught during his escape thanks to the quick thinking of the employee.
The suspect was caught on surveillance footage from the NYPD inside the store at 422 Fulton St. during the attempted heist on Monday night.
The suspect reportedly entered the store earlier in the day and patiently waited for it to close, as per the authorities.
According to the police, he tried to escape after hiding the expensive jewelry in a suitcase.
As he made his exit, a store employee approached him and he left the suitcase behind, ultimately leaving without taking anything.
Fortunately, there were no reported injuries.
The Macy’s store on Fulton Street will be closing in the coming months as part of the retailer’s “Bold New Chapter” strategy. This strategy involves closing 150 underperforming stores in order to shift focus onto the best-performing ones.
