Prosecutors have charged a Chicago man with involuntary manslaughter, alleging he shot and killed a woman while playing with a gun over the weekend.
On Saturday afternoon, Chicago police responded to a “person shot” report from a home in the 7900 block of South Essex. Tajanae Stephens, 22, was found dead of a gunshot wound to the head, according to investigators.
Nashawn Ware, 21, who lived in the apartment, was present at the scene and indicated that he participated in Stephens’ death, according to a CPD report. Ware and Stephens were “playing with the firearm prior to it discharging and striking her in the head,” according to the report.
According to court records, prosecutors charged Ware with obstruction of justice for hiding the gun. The CPD seized a firearm at the scene.
Judge Mary Marubio denied the state’s custody plea and ordered Ware home with electronic monitoring and a daily curfew.
