Amherst man arrested after standoff that stemmed from domestic incident

BUFFALO, N.Y. — An Amherst man faces charges following a domestic incident that sparked a multi-hour standoff on Tuesday morning at a home on North Bailey Avenue, according to police.

Officers were dispatched to the 4800 block of Bailey after a 911 call came in around 1 a.m. Rayquell Grant, a male resident, allegedly fled when police arrived and later returned through a rear window around 4:30 a.m., prompting authorities to set up a perimeter.

A WIVB photographer, who had been on the scene since about 7 a.m., reported hearing police using a megaphone to urge someone to answer the phone or come to the window with their hands up. A woman and two children eventually exited the home.

After searching the residence, police found Grant hiding in the attic and took him into custody around 11:15 a.m. He faces charges of first-degree criminal contempt, criminal obstruction of breathing, and endangering the welfare of a child.

Several roads were closed throughout the morning but will reopen. Police have stated that the incident was isolated.
